Common Mistakes

  • Submitting AI output to the client without reading it in the target language

    Impact: Idiomatic errors, wrong register, or mistranslated technical terms reach the client. Published errors damage the client's brand in a market they cannot self-monitor.

    Correction: Always read the full AI output in the target language before reviewing. If you cannot read fluently in the target language, you are not qualified to review this pair.

  • Claiming to offer certified, sworn, or notarised translation without the credential

    Impact: This is misrepresentation. In many jurisdictions, falsely claiming certification for legal or official documents is unlawful and voids the document's legal standing.

    Correction: Explicitly state in all client communications what your service is: AI-assisted translation with human bilingual review. Refer certification requests to a credentialed professional.

  • Pasting confidential source documents into public AI tools without client consent

    Impact: Client data—contracts, financial records, medical documents—may be processed by an AI provider without consent, violating confidentiality obligations and potentially data protection regulations.

    Correction: Before starting any engagement, confirm with the client whether AI tool use is permitted for their content. Use enterprise or privacy-compliant tool tiers for sensitive content, or work without AI for those specific documents.

Practice Execution

  1. Find a short, publicly available piece of content (a product description, a news summary) in a language you understand.
  2. Run Prompt 1 on it to generate a translation into your stronger language.
  3. Read the full output in the target language and mark every phrase that sounds unnatural or wrong.
  4. Build a short terminology log for five key terms used in the source text.
  5. Run Prompt 2 to check the translation against your terminology log.
  6. Write a two-sentence review note explaining the changes you made and why.
